The company was established on
16 September 1981
as ‘HANDELS- EN INDUSTRIEONDERNEMING VELOM N.V.’ in the district of Suriname at the Kwattaweg 583. At the time, the founder of the company saw a great market opportunity in the manufacturing of concrete blocks. Our city had started to expand to the outer suburbs in the North and South and there were multiple building activities. Therein lay the opportunity since there was not a decent block-making factory in the west and customers had to pay considerably for A-quality blocks to be transported from other factories to our side of
Paramaribo
. The company started out with a Vibro-Universal mobile block machine, which in itself was very sophisticated and ahead of its time. The company has developed over the years and even more since late 1999, when the founder’s son took over as manager. With South-African equipment (a semi-automatic hydraulic block machine) he has established a concrete block-making factory, which is consistent with all the standards required for producing A-quality products. It is a continuous and ongoing process. The most recent development, late 2005, in the production process has been the addition of a
PLC
human interface, which made the production run automatic and results in a product up to a higher standard. VELOM N.V. is currently proud to say it has a definite position on the building-products market and a very sound reputation with its customers.
